On April 19, 2016, Momus presented a talk by award-winning art critic and former Momus contributing editor Orit Gat titled “If It Looks Like Zeitgeist, It Might be Anxiety: Art After the Internet.” In keeping with a line of inquiry on which Gat has built her reputation, she discussed our relationship to technology as one being defined by a curious mix of reliance and fear, exploring the current place of art in connection to networked technology, platforms for the presentation and dissemination of art online, and the discourse they may (or may not) have created. Gat also discussed the surfeit of recent exhibitions dedicated to art that deals with data, the internet, and technology, and what fuels these trends: “the anxiety of being left behind.”
This Momus lecture was the first of more to come. It was co-presented by InterAccess Gallery, and hosted by the Drake Hotel.
