In Momus: The Podcast’s 7th episode, we have brought together a group of artists, curators, and scholars to update the conversation around Artist-Run Culture in Canada. It’s a well-known history, one approaching legend, in this country: the emergence of artist-run centers seeking to address a lack of options for artist representation while forming a network across a vast geography; and then their professionalization, one approaching an institutionalization that mirrors the very thing they were made to contravene. Now, in a moment of large shifts across the arts sector, with a recent change to our country’s funding models, and a refocusing of our social values on historically underrepresented groups, our relationship to a Canadian cultural legacy is up for renewal.

Caitlin Jones is a long-time cultural worker, curator, and writer—working with and within a range of institutional and independent contexts. As Executive Director of BCA (formerly BC Artscape) she was responsible for the development and operations of multiple affordable real-estate projects for the cultural community. Prior to her move to BC she worked at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Rhizome.org in New York, NY. Her writings on contemporary art and new media have appeared in a wide range of exhibition catalogues and other international publications including Mousse, The Believer, and Documents in Contemporary Art series, among others.
Peter Morin is a Tahltan Nation artist, author, curator and professor at the Ontario College of Art and Design.
Peggy Gale is an independent Canadian curator, writer, and editor.
Sylvie Gilbert is an independent curator in Montreal. She was curator at the Walter Phillips Gallery from 1989 to 1994 and worked as a Director for Canada Council for the Arts.
